June
19-22, 2008:
Yosemite !
NOTE: Your check must be received
by
no later than May 14.
After that, Yosemite will reclaim any slots and it is unlikely that you will be able to get a space.
When and
Where. The SF Ski Club
has booked 20 tent cabins in Camp
Curry on the Yosemite Valley floor for the nights of
Thursday June 19, Friday June 20, and Saturday June 21, 2008. Most
of us will be leaving early on Thursday to beat the traffic. We
have to check out on Sunday, but many people like to spend some of that
last day in Yosemite (or at least have brunch at the Ahwanee Hotel
there) before heading back.
Who Can
Come. Anyone who
is a member of a Singles League club – and yes, you can bring guests! (Subject
to approval by the trip leader.)
Why You
Should Go. It’s not
easy to get lodging in Yosemite. If
you love Yosemite or want to see it for the first time, this is your
chance! This is an extremely
popular trip. (For some great photos of Yosemite, see www.yosemite.org/vryos/pages/scenicarch.htm.)
There is hiking for all levels, bicycling (rent a bike there or bring
your own), lazy river rafting, swimming (the pool or the river), a group
barbecue on Saturday night, optional dinners at the restaurants in the
valley and much, much more. (Yes, the photo is from an earlier
Yosemite trip.)
Accommodations
and Prices. Each tent
cabin sleeps two, in separate beds, or three, though two of them will
have to share a double bed. For two people per tent cabin (the
usual), the
price is $175 per person for the three nights.
(Yes, the cabin rates have gone up.) For three people per tent cabin, the cost is
$140 per person.
These prices include drinks and chips the first night, morning coffee
and non-food supplies for the barbeque are included.
(The price does not include the $20 park entrance fee or food,
but you can bring your own and there are food stores in Yosemite.) Yes, you
must sign up for all three nights.
Food.
There really aren’t any cooking facilities in the tent
cabins. (Canvas and white gas are
not a good mix!) Still, Camp Curry
has a cafeteria that’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus a
coffee bar that sells muffins and coffee in the morning and an outdoor
pizzeria. There’s also a
store at Camp Curry that sells food (perhaps twice the size of a
convenience store and with more appropriate selections).
People often buy sandwiches and trail mix there to take with them
for lunch. There is also a full-size food store in Yosemite Village and
some lunch places. Finally,
there are a number of restaurants available for dinner at various
prices, and of course there will be the barbecue on Saturday night.
It really does work.
How to Sign Up.
Complete the Reservation Form (click HERE)
and send it with a check for the correct amount made out to the S.F. Ski
Club. Mail it to:
Bruce E. Methven, Methven & Associates, 2232 Sixth Street, Berkeley,
CA94710. Your reservation is not confirmed until your check is
cashed and it clears.
Preparation. If you plan
on hiking, you should consider walking for at least one-half hour each
day each day for the three weeks prior to the trip. You may want
to throw some items in a day pack for a bit of weight when you do this,
since you'll be carrying water, food and perhaps a sweatshirt when you
hike.
More Information. Those who sign up will receive an email with
many details about the trip.
Questions. Contact
Bruce E. Methven at bmethven@methvenlaw.com
for questions. There is a flyer
also, although it's more or less identical to this
information. |

Snow
Babe of the Year!
At the annual Bay Area Singles League Snow Ball in November
2006, our own Dory
Ryan was named Snow Babe of the Year for her work as the former President of
our Club.
Yes, we know the official title is "Woman of the
Year", but somehow "Snow Babe of the Year" sounds better.
Congratulations, Dory! |

Ski Season
During the season, our winter sports calendar is filled with organized
and "ad hoc" trips to the nearby Sierra Nevada for fun in the
snow. On
any given weekend you can join club members and friends to ski or board at Lake Tahoe
ski resorts, or on Nordic trails. Club membership provides discount programs for lodging, transportation,
lift tickets
even lessons. For those who enjoy organized competition, we
invite you to join our Race Team
as it competes against other Bay Area and regional ski clubs (on skis OR BOARDS) in the amateur
alpine racing program. In addition, we offer organized out-of-state group Trips
to popular ski areas in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and anywhere one
can carve a turn in the snow! Membership
in the Club entitles you to Discount
Lift Tickets, and gives you access to a
cabin for race weekends.

| E-Mail
Lists
OK, here's the deal. We have TWO e-mail lists, but you have to a current
member to be on either one of them. One
is the Official E-Mail list and one is the Unofficial List and they are used for
different things. Don't even ask to be
added to either list unless you are a current member (meaning you've
submitted your application, paid your membership dues, and been accepted as
a member).

|
| The Official List |
|
This is used for Board members (and the webmasters) to send Club
announcements to the members.
Other Club members cannot send e-mail to this list. |
|
This is a list of all members EXCEPT for those who
specifically ask to be removed from it. In other words, it's an
"opt-out" list. |
|
IF and only if you're a board member, you can send
e-mail to
everyone on this list by simply addressing your e-mail to sfskiclub_members@yahoogroups.com.
If you have any trouble with this, contact the . |

If you're a member and want to remove yourself from this list, send
e-mail to sfskiclub_members-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com.

The
Club Wants You to Lead an Event!
Yes, you CAN organize and lead an Ski Club event.
In fact, the Club encourages you to do this!
It's only 3 easy steps:
|
|
|
|
|
| |
|
|
1. Think of an event that you would like to attend and that you would like other Club members to join.
For
example, you may want to go to a jazz concert and think your
ski-club friends would enjoy it too. Or, you may love to cook and share
food, so you can organize a club potluck.
|
To find activities, head to our San
Francisco and Bay Area Activities page. There you'll
see event calendars, movies, live music, performing arts, museums,
restaurants and many
upcoming events.
|
|
|
2. Contact our Activities Director,
Cathy by e-mailing judyshulman@hotmail.com
the proposed specifics (along with your phone number and an e-mail
address). Try to give as much advance notice as possible, since we
need time to get the activity approved and then advertised.
|
|
3. Send our Activities
Director the announcement
(once the event is approved) as you would like it to read for your event.
Include the time, date,
gathering place, cost, contact information, what
to bring, whether guests are allowed, any deadline to sign up, etc.

About This Web Site
Changing
the Size of the Text You See. To change the text size if you are using Internet Explorer, click
"View" at the top of your screen, then "Text Size" and pick
a larger or smaller text size. This web site is designed for
1024 x 768 resolution (about 52%
of users) and tested regularly for 800 x 600 resolution (about 32%
of users), but should work fine at higher resolutions. The text may be small at
resolutions higher than
1024 x 768 and it may be a bit large at the 800 x 600 resolution.

Adding
a Shortcut to this Site to Your Desktop.
To add a shortcut to this site to your desktop, click "File" at the
top, then "Send", then "Shortcut to
Desktop". (This only works for Internet
Explorer.)
Adding
This Site as a Browser Favorite. To add
this site as a browser favorite, click "Favorites" at the
top, then "Add to Favorites", then "OK".
(This only works for Internet
Explorer.)
If you want to change your screen resolution and you're
using Windows, here's how (you can always change it back): right
click a blank section of your Desktop, click "Properties", and click
"Settings"; write down -- or at least remember -- your current screen
resolution (which may be something like "800 x 600 pixels"); move the
slider to a different screen resolution, click "Apply" and then click
"OK". This will change the size of your Desktop icons and also
change the size of things in your browser.
Although the
"live" picture at the top is usually updated at the camera end every
five minutes, if you have the SF Ski Club web site up on your screen for
more than five minutes, you'll have to click the "refresh" button on
your browser to get an updated picture. (The picture does get
"stuck" on the camera end from time to time, but they are
usually pretty good about getting the camera working again.) For more
cams, head to Outdoor Cameras.
If all the images do not show up
(instead you get a white box with red "x" in it), try refreshing your
browser window. If you are using Internet Explorer (and most people are),
click the icon at the top with the two curved arrows that are chasing each
other. (If you let your cursor rest on the icon for a moment, usually a
little "refresh" label will come up.)
Some of our forms are in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format. It's

If the animations don't
work and you are using ZoneAlarm as your firewall, you'll need to change its
settings. With the new version of ZoneAlarm, open ZoneAlarm, click the
"Privacy" link, in the "Ad Blocking" section click the
"Custom" button, then make sure the "Animation" box does NOT
have a check in it.
Favicons
are the "custom" icons on your browser's Favorites list and on your
desktop shortcuts (as opposed to the default icon that otherwise appears -- and
which looks like this
).
The SF Ski Club favicon is
.
One problem with favicons is that if you clear your browser cache (the saved
copies of the web pages you've visited), you lose your favicons and get the
boring default icon instead. If you (understandably) find this annoying,
there is a program call FavOrg you can run that will save your favicons.
download it.
This site is tested for compatibility with MS Internet Explorer and
Mozilla Firefox
(which effectively covers Netscape,
since it uses the same engine as Firefox). This covers over 90% of
users. We recommend a display of at least 800x600 pixels, with your
browser running in full screen mode. Still,
it's sometimes difficult to get things to work the same in different formats--so the formatting may not always be perfect
with your browser running on your computer. (Actually, the screens do not necessarily format the same way
for two different computers even if both are using the same resolution and
browser. The operating system plays a role, too.)
